II International Forum on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in The Gambia
This 2018 has a good start for the team of Wassu Foundation and its research center, Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK), who organize the II International Forum on FGM/C in The Gambia: Exploring strategies and good practices - From local to global - Evidence into action. The meeting, which will take place on February 5th and 6th on the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance with Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, will be held in Brufut and has the support of the European Union, the Government of the Republic of The Gambia, the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
This forum is sequel to the first one held in Brufut, in 2009. Since then, several achievements have been accomplished, new challenges have arisen and old ones still remain deeply rooted. Following Wassu’s methodology of applied research and knowledge transfer, on a transnational basis of migration, where FGM/C is in Diaspora, the main purpose of the event is to update research, developments and interventions in The Gambia, Africa and Europe for the management and prevention of FGM/C, seeking to contribute to the 5.3 Sustainable Development Goals to “eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilations”.
