“Wassu Gambia Kafo sensitises law makers on FGM/C”

National Assembly Members (NAMs), under the auspices Select Committee on Health, Women and Children, concluded a training on Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting (FGM/C) conducted by the Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) on Wednesday, 18th April, 2018 at th National Assembly complex in Banjul.

In his introduction, Mr. Momodou Ceesay, the Clerk of the National Assembly, who also doubled as the moderator of the opening ceremony, emphasized the need for such training of National Assembly Members (NAMs) to enable them become better equipped or au fait with issues that come before them for legislation or support. He urged the NAMs to be proactive during the course of the training so as to raise their awareness on issues relating to FGM/C.

Hon. Ousman Sillah, NAM for Banjul North and Chairperson of the Select Committee, in his welcoming remarks, expressed appreciation for impressive the turn-out of the NAMs both from the Select Committee and the invited ones and which he described as “impressive and encouraging”.

“This training for the law makers on FGM/C was mooted way back in the middle of 2017 when I met with the director of Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) to discuss how we can engage in efforts to address the issues affecting women and girls in The Gambia, particularly FGM/C”, he told his participants. Hon. Sillah said this was followed by the invitation of the members of the committee by Wassu Gambia Kafo to attend an international conference of FGM/C held in The Gambia in February this year.

The Health Committee Chair said this training is not only important for the members of the Health Committee but the entire National Assembly Members who need to be fully sensitised on the harmful effects of this traditional practice on women and girls as they have a very crucial role to play as law makers and representatives in passing and ensuring the enforcement of legislations.
