Presentation of Clinical Results on FGM/C to Religious Leaders in The Gambia
As requested by the Office of the Vice President through the Women's Bureau, WGK collected data on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in The Gambia. Two researches were carried out by WGK with the support of the Cuban Medical Mission in tThe Gambia and the School for Enrolled Community Health Nurses & Midwives (ECHN/M) students of Mansakonko and were supervised by WGK and ECHN/M tutors. Women's Bureau decided to expose these results to the religious leaders to bring scientific evidence in The Gambia.
The clinical data was presented to the religious leaders on September 8th at the Paradise Suites Hotel and was chaired by Dr. Jah of the University of The Gambia. The Executive Director of Women's Bureau Mrs. Ida Faye Hydara opened remarks, making special incision in being there not to condemn but to share the outcomes of the research and together make headway. Results of the clinical study were presented in the local languages (Mandinka and Wollof) by Barra Njie, senior trainer of Wassu Gambia Kafo.
The data on FGM/C provided by Wassu Gambia Kafo was highly appreciated by the scholars as it is the first of its kind in The Gambia. They declared against FGM/C types II and III, but scholars also stated that the Islamic Shariah is un-modifiable and un-amendable and recommend Wassu Gambia Kafo to embark on a nationwide research to gather more evidence.
Finally, an important outcome of the discussion points in the direction of the need of training of religious leaders on FGM/C.
