The Gambia National Assembly Members (NAM) committed with the abandonment of FGM/C
On Saturday, December 7th, the Wassu Gambia Kafo (WGK) Training Team delivered a training on FGM to the Gambia National Assembly Members (NAM), activity framed in the project funded by the Diputación Foral de Álava (DFA).
During the activity, the NAMs discussed the complications of FGM, concluding that, just as they would not want their daughters to suffer the practice, they also do not want it for any girl in the Gambia.
The NAMs proposed that WGK work hand in hand with the Assembly in three areas: condemn the medicalization of FGM in the new amendment of The women's Act 2015 ; that the NGO participate in the renewal of the Sexual Offences Act 2013 ; In addition to getting involved in the formation of the general population.
One of the debates that was generated, revolved around the relationship between FGM and religion. Although there is no religion that requires the realization of FGM, as it is a long-established traditional practice, it is difficult to eradicate this type of justification, which underlines the need for continuous awareness work with communities.
As a recommendation, it was proposed to include the check-up of girls in the routines of health workers, in this way it could be better evaluated when to apply the law.
