Lisbon hosts the 3rd International Seminar “Institutional Responses to FGM/C”

Although sociocultural transformations can begin to take shape through the academy or non-governmental entities, it’s important to have appropriate institutional support if what you want is to end a problem. Precisely, that was the central topic of the 3rd International Seminar of the MAP-FGM project, "Institutional Responses to FGM", celebrated in Lisbon on September 28th and 29th.

On the premises of ISCTE-IUL university, experts from several African countries (Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Guinea Conakry and Mauritania) and Europeans, contributed to the discussion and reflection on the complexity of institutional measures to combat and prevent FGM/C, both in Africa as in Europe.

The presentations dealt with the models of Combat and Prevention of FGM/C in West Africa and the implementation of Human Rights Agreements and Treaties in the region. In addition, were presented examples of interventions through institutional responses in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Sierra Leone, also, the work carried out in Portugal by NGOs, associations, the General Directorate of Health and the Gender Equality Commission.
