Fundación Bancaria "la Caixa" and Wassu-UAB Foundation united in the prevention and abandonment of FGM/C

One more year Fundación Bancaria 'la Caixa', through its Interculturality and Social Action program, decides to support the work of the Wassu-UAB Foundation in prevention and awareness of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in Catalonia. The project proposes an integrated response to act on FGM/C as a form of gender violence involving key agents in the prevention of practice and attention to its consequences in Catalonia.

Prevention and care is promoted through two main axes. In the first place, it is proposed to train primary care professionals in health, social work and psychology, through the Official Professional Associations, as well as students of social work and medicine, in coordination with the Faculty of Social Work of the University of Barcelona and the Center Dolors Piera d'Igualtat d'Oportunitats i Promoció de la Dona, of the University of Lleida.

Secondly, it is proposed to raise awareness, empowerment and training for women, men and young people living in Catalonia, whose origins are countries where FGM/C is carried out. The workshops promote debate and intercultural dialogue to dismantle the reasons that sustain the practice, and walk towards prevention and abandonment based on respect for culture and tradition, and non-stigmatization.

The ultimate goal of the project is to contribute to the prevention of FGM/C as a form of violence that perpetuates inequalities due to gender, promote adequate sexual and reproductive health, and the right to right to make choices about their own body of women and girls living in Catalonia.
