The City Council of Badalona develops a pioneer programme of prevention against female genital mutilation
The City Council of Badalona and Badalona Serveis Assistencials maintains a collaborative agreement with Wassu Foundation, which allows the implementation of a programme for professionals. It enables a better attention to the population regarding FGM/C and a preventive approach on the topic. The programme based on the Wassu methodology has allowed since 2010 the training of more than 500 professionals of 10 different city services. As the councillor, Francesc Ribot explains in the press release: “now the 76% of the interventions made in Badalona are in the frame of a new preventive approach with families. In 2008, when the proceedings were reactive and only in urgent situations, the risk of FGM didn’t reduce, the communities were stigmatized and the relationship between professionals and families deteriorated”. Moreover, Ribot points out the need to do networking prevention (using the circuits available of services and social entities) to empower the families to take informed decisions related with the abandonment of the practice.
